Tourism specialist

Certified tourism specialist is a publicly recognized German qualification at master's level , which is awarded after successfully completing branch- related commercial advancement training in accordance with the Vocational Training Act. The nationwide examination takes place on the basis of a special statutory ordinance before the examination board of a Chamber of Industry and Commerce (IHK).

Areas of work and tasks

Tourism specialists are qualified to carry out the following tasks responsibly:

  1. Independent and responsible perception of management tasks in the process of providing tourism services, taking into account economic, legal, ecological and social aspects.
  2. Recognizing developments in the tourism market and creating new products.
  3. Deriving appropriate market strategies and results-oriented application of marketing instruments.
  4. Participation in education and training.

Training duration

The DIHK framework plan recommends 650 hours of instruction for further training to become a tourism specialist. Public and private educational institutions offer courses for exam preparation between three and 24 months, both full-time and part-time; However, participation in a course is not compulsory for admission to the examination.

Exam admission requirements

Admission to the examination to become a certified tourism specialist is granted to anyone who can prove a successfully passed final examination in a recognized tourism-related training occupation and a total of at least two years of relevant professional experience or a comparable qualification.

Examination and completion

The examination is divided into a business-related and an activity-specific part.

After successfully passing the exam, the examining Chamber of Commerce and Industry awards the publicly recognized qualification as certified tourism specialist .

Participants can apply for benefits through the Master BAföG to support further training costs and examination fees .
