Toured
Tourte [tuʀt] is the family name of three important French bow makers of the 18th and 19th centuries who had their workshops in Paris :
- Nicolas Pierre Tourte , Tourte père († 1764), was probably also a violin maker . Although qualitatively not rated on the level of the work of his sons (who were probably trained in his father's workshop), his bows are seen as a significant advance over the products of his predecessors and contemporaries.
- Nicolas Léonard Tourte , Tourte l'aîné ["the elder"] (* Paris January 20, 1746; † September 11, 1807 or 1817 ibid), although less known than his younger brother, his achievements for modern bow making are just as important estimated. Some authentic sheets with the TOURTE L branding have been preserved.
- François Xavier Tourte , Tourte le jeune [“the younger”] (* Paris 1747 or 1748; † April 25, 1835 there), the “Stradivarius of the bow” and inventor of the modern bow construction, whose work is still considered unsurpassed.
Tourte is also the family name of:
- Abraham Louis Tourte (1818–1863), Swiss politician, painter and diplomat
