Trait (unit)

Trait , dash, (line), was the old French name for millimeters according to a decree of the French government of 13th Brumaire in the year 9 of the new French calendar. That corresponds to November 2, 1801. In Switzerland the length measure differed.

  • France : 1 trait = 1 millimeter
  • Switzerland : 1 trait = 0.3 millimeters
    • after 1853: 10 traits = 3.0 millimeters = 1/10 Pouce = 1 ligne
