Traveling Wilburys Vol. 1 is the first studio album by the supergroup consisting of George Harrison († 2001), Jeff Lynne , Roy Orbison († 1988), Tom Petty († 2017) and Bob Dylan . It was released on October 24, 1988 (USA: October 25, 1988).

History of origin

In early April 1988, George Harrison's record company asked for an additional song for the third maxi single release from his album Cloud Nine , This Is Love , as no remix of the single was planned and they wanted to create a further purchase incentive for fans who wanted the album already owned. Harrison asked in his circle of friends around, who could make a recording studio available at short notice, and ended on April 5, 1988 in Bob Dylan's studio in Santa Monica ( California ). Jeff Lynne, who, like Harrison's album, was to produce the title, brought Roy Orbison with him. For his part, Dylan called Tom Petty to see if he would like to join. The piece they recorded was Handle with Care , composed and recorded the same day, named after the label on a cardboard box in Dylan's garage.

When Warner was found, the piece was "too good for a B-side" and wished a complete album. Since all of the artist's record labels thought this super group was a good idea, they decided to record a joint album. In just ten days between May 7 and 16, 1988, nine more songs were written, arranged and recorded in the Dave Stewart Studio . The final work for the album, such as the recording of additional instruments and mixes, was done in George Harrison's studio in the summer of 1988.

The main vocals for the individual songs were split up, so George Harrison essentially sang the songs: Handle with Care (with vocals from the other Traveling Wilburys) and Heading for the Light ; Bob Dylan: Congratulations , Dirty World , Margarita and Tweeter and the Monkey Man ; Tom Petty: Last Night and End of the Line (with vocal parts by George Harrison, Jeff Lynne and Roy Orbison); Roy Orbison: Not Alone Any More and Jeff Lynne: Rattled .

Before the release of the second single, Roy Orbison died of a heart attack on December 6, 1988. The video for End of the Line then showed a photo of the singer and repeated a rocking chair with a guitar on it.

In 1989 the Traveling Wilburys received a Grammy for their album in the category Best Rock Performance By a Duo or Group with Vocal . In August 1994, the album was multi-platinum in the US for three million copies sold.
