Traveling Wilburys Vol. 3 is the second and final studio album of the supergroup consisting of George Harrison († 2001), Jeff Lynne , Tom Petty († 2017) and Bob Dylan . It was released on October 29, 1990 (USA: November 6, 1990).

History of origin

After Roy Orbison's death, the four remaining Traveling Wilburys - contrary to initial expectations - continued musically. In October 1990, the group's second album was released, entitled Vol. 3 .

There are several attempts to explain why the title Vol. 2 was left out between Vol. 1 and Vol. 3 . Jeff Lynne claimed that the whole thing was a mere joke: “There was so much pressure and expectation regarding Vol. 2 that we decided to skip that and go straight for Vol. 3” (“There was so much pressure and such high expectations for Vol. 2 that we decided to skip this and record Vol. 3 directly ”).

The recordings began in Bel Air ( California ) in the Wilbury Mountain Studio, where most of the instruments were recorded, they extended from March to May 1990. The final work for the album, such as the vocals, the recording of further instruments and mixes were Made in George Harrison's studio in July 1990. A total of 15 songs were recorded. Due to Bob Dylan's scheduling problems, he added his vocals to most of the tracks in advance. The other members of the band could then decide which songs they wanted to sing again. The decision not to change much resulted in Dylan's voice dominating this album.

In January 1991, the album went platinum in the United States for one million copies sold.

Cover design

The design of the cover is by David Costa and Nicky Hames, the cover photos by Caroline Greyshock. The CD comes with a fold-out, illustrated leaflet containing a fictional story about the Traveling Wilburys and instructions on how to dance the Wilbury Twist.
