Tumbleweeds (comic strip)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Tumbleweeds is an American comic strip written by Tom K. Ryan. The author, who signed as TK Ryan , narrates comic episodes from the Wild West , transferring modern problems into this scenario of the past.

content

The stories of the comic strips take place in the wild west town of Grimy Gulch , the village of the Poohawk Indians and a nearby fort of the US cavalry. The title character is the cowboy Tumbleweeds , who tries to keep his life as effortless as possible and let himself drift. And under no circumstances does he want to marry Hildegard Hamhocker, who, however, is after him. His two horses are Blossom , often asleep, and the mostly drunk Epic . The villain in the place is Snake Eye, who steals cattle or cheats while playing cards.

Creation and publication

While Tom K. Ryan worked as a freelance illustrator, he was particularly enthusiastic about the old western stories. With Tumbleweeds he then created a series in which he used and parodied the genre clichés. Introduced in September 1965, the flick was first published for decades by the Register and Tribune Syndicate and later by the King Features Syndicate . After 42 years, Ryan retired and graduated from Tumbleweeds on December 30, 2007. The strips were also published collectively in 21 volumes as well as a best-of volume in 1994.

In Germany, a single Tumbleweeds volume with the title Heiße Colts appeared in 1970 as Volume 11 of the Aar-Cartoon book series . Tumbleweeds ran under the title Hill-Billy in 1975 and 1976 in Zack . The series was published in Italy with six anthologies.

In 1978 one of Filmation's strips for the series Fabulous Funnies was filmed. Due to disputes about the rights, however, there was a single appearance in the first episode. In 1980, Tumbleweeds made another brief appearance in an episode of The Fantastic Funnies . In the MGM Grand Adventures Theme Park , an attraction based on the city of Grimy Gulch was created and two stage pieces were created on Tumbleweeds : a show in Las Vegas and in 1983 a musical that mainly toured through high schools.
