Turret revolver

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The turret revolver (turret = English for revolver head) was a handgun .

These percussion weapons were an attempt to attach the chambers of the revolver drum , unlike the usual revolvers , to a drum axis arranged transversely to the direction of fire. The chambers pointed in a star shape to all sides, and also directly back towards the shooter. Due to this design, weapons of this type were not popular and accidents occurred as a result of series detonations. In addition, the construction was clumsy and unwieldy. Above all, weapons manufacturers saw this as an opportunity to circumvent Samuel Colt's patents . Manufacturers were John Webster Cochran in 1837 and Porter in 1851. Colt spread the rumor that Porter was killed by a series ignition during the military demonstration of his weapon, which was incorrect, but underscored the dangerousness of the design for the shooter. In addition to revolvers, revolver rifles were also manufactured with the same structure and are in great demand today. In comparison with the revolvers of orthodox design, turret revolvers could never prevail due to their extremely dangerous design for the shooter.

A weapon related to its construction is the Le Protector .
