Spotting plate

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The spotting plate is a metal or stone plate with a precisely manufactured flat surface. It has a hard surface that has been processed by grinding or scraping . In metalworking , it is used to check surfaces for unevenness.

If you want to make a spotting plate by hand without expensive tools, this is only possible if you work on three plates at the same time. These three plates are colored with spotting paint and rubbed against each other in alternating directions without pressure. Raised points become visible and can be removed with a flat scraper. The more load-bearing points are created in this way, the better the quality of the manufactured spotting plate. If only two plates were used, one would become concave, the other convex , and there would never be a flat surface.

The spotting ruler is a special form of the spotting plate . It has the shape of a triangular profile bar with handle bars on the two end faces. All three surfaces are finely processed by grinding or scraping. Particularly good results are achieved with the stone slab, mineral materials are not very elastic and will not show any permanent deformation if they are actually used improperly.
