Today Tutima is a German watch manufacturer . It traces its tradition back to the quality brand Tutima of the companies UROFA (Uhren-Rohwerke-Fabrik AG) and UFAG (Uhrenfabrik AG), which were founded in Glashütte in 1926 under the direction of the lawyer Ernst Kurtz . The name Tutima is derived from the Latin adjective “ tutus ” (“safe, protected”).

history

In the 1930s, a total of 1000 people were employed in the two legally independent stock corporations UROFA and UFAG. One day before the factory was destroyed by Soviet bombers on May 7, 1945, Kurtz, the managing director of UROFA and UFAG, fled to the West with some employees. He first started in Memmelsdorf , Upper Franconia, with a watch production under his name with parts from Glashütte. High-quality wristwatch calibres developed in-house and sold under the Glashütte Tradition brand were added later . In 1951 he relocated production to Ganderkesee in Lower Saxony .

In 1956 the Kurtz company became insolvent and passed to other owners. After the latter gave up the production of watch movements, Dieter Delecate, a former employee of Kurtz and his successor, continued the manufacture of watches at the beginning of 1960 by purchasing third-party movements. Shortly thereafter, Delecate was the first in West Germany to put the name Tutima on watches again. This was already revived under Ernst Kurtz during a brief partnership with Werner Pohlan from Glashütte in the sales company Tutima Uhren - Glashütte Tradition . In 1970 the name Tutima was registered with the German Patent Office for protection.

In 2008 production began to be relocated to Glashütte. Since May 2011, watches have been produced in this new factory with self-developed and self-made and modified, purchased mechanical movements. In memory of the father of the Tutima brand, Ernst Kurtz, the Homage Minute Repeater was presented. Since April 2013, Tutima Glashütte has been producing four new model families, namely Saxon One , Grand Flieger , M2 and Patria as well as the single model Hommage . The chief designer at Tutima Glashütte was the Dresden master watchmaker Rolf Lang until 2012, while the design of the current watches is based on previous watch families.

A well-known Tutima product is the military family from the references 798- (steel case), 760- (titanium case) and 750- (titanium case with bidirectional rotating bezel), which are NATO chronographs with their distinctive case shape and can be operated with gloves Chronograph buttons are known.
