RSI LA 1 is the name of the first public television program in Italian-speaking Switzerland .

It is operated by RSI , a corporate unit of SRG SSR . The broadcast started in 1961. The studios are located in Lugano . LA 1 is a classic full program and the most watched station in the core broadcast area (Italian-speaking Switzerland). Here, as well as in the bouquets of French -speaking and German-speaking Switzerland , it was broadcast across the board via DVB-T until June 3, 2019 . The program can also be seen via cable and satellite . Until February 28, 2009, the transmitter was called TSI 1, before that (before TSI 2 started broadcasting) RTSI. RSI LA1 has also been broadcast in HD since February 29, 2012.

Reception in Northern Italy

For a long time, TSI uno was about as popular in northern Italy as ORF 1 in southern Bavaria . The reception radius extended far beyond Milan . However, the reception possibilities became worse and worse after private broadcasters were permitted in Italy and, due to a regulatory gap, they were able to put new frequencies into operation unhindered, which massively disrupted the Swiss signal.

It was not until 1995 that the frequency of the TSI transmitter Castel San Pietro , about five kilometers from the extreme southern tip of Switzerland, was able to re-enable reception in Milan. Channel 36 was used, which in Italy had to remain largely free of radio broadcasts due to other occupancy. With the introduction of DVB-T in Ticino and the switch-off of analogue broadcasting in 2006, however, Switzerland gave up channel 36; The frequencies now used by DVB-T can still only be received extremely poorly due to strong interference. Proposals to broadcast LA 1 in Italy via DVB-T have so far only been implemented in South Tyrol , where the program has been broadcast by the Südtirol broadcaster since May 2010 . The so-called TSI Italia project will not be pursued until further notice due to SRG SSR's financial shortage.

Since 2014, SRG has been operating a new Italian-language internet program with tvsvizzera.it . For the launch, the Federal Council adjusted the performance agreement on SRG's journalistic activities abroad. The website is aimed at an Italian-speaking audience with an interest in Switzerland and costs 1.5 million Swiss francs per year. The federal government takes over half of this.
