Twice-told tales

Twice-Told Tales is a short prose collection by the American writer Nathaniel Hawthorne . A first volume appeared in 1837, a second in 1842. The final version , supplemented by a foreword, was published in 1851. A selection in German was published in 1852 under the title Twice told stories . Most of the stories are available in individual translations.

Publication history

Most of the stories and literary sketches collected in the Twice-Told Tales had previously appeared anonymously in various newspapers, magazines and almanacs such as the Salem Gazette , The New-England Magazine or The Token , and it was only with the publication of the first volume in 1837 that Hawthorne presented himself as to recognize its author.

Some of the narratives were originally written as part of previous narrative cycles. Neither for Seven Tales of My Native Land (written around 1826-27) nor for Provincial Tales (around 1828-1830) Hawthorne found a publisher and finally destroyed most of the manuscripts. His third collection, The Story Teller , appeared continuously in New England Magazine from November 1834, but after the magazine changed hands in 1835, publication did not continue as planned. This work too is lost in its entirety. The Twice-Told Tales are Hawthorne's first successful release under his own name.

A full translation is pending. Most of the stories are available in individual translations, but are scattered over various anthologies, the vast majority of which are only available in antiquarian versions. One of the most comprehensive and also the only one that also offers a translation of the preface to the Twice-Told Tales (by Hans-Joachim Lang ) is:
