USS Iwo Jima
USS Iwo Jima is the name of three ships of the United States Navy in commemoration of the Battle of Iwo Jima Island :
- The first Iwo Jima (CV-46) was to be a Ticonderoga- class aircraft carrier , but construction was canceled when the war ended in August 1945.
- The second Iwo Jima (LPH-2) was the first specially designed amphibious assault ship in the Navy and the first ship of the class of the same name . She served from 1961 to 1993.
- The third Iwo Jima (LHD-7) is a Wasp- class amphibious assault ship . She entered service in 2001 and is currently in active service.
