The sequence of movements of the Uchi-Uke

The Uchi-Uke (or Uchi-Ude-Uke , Japanese 内 腕 受 け ) describes a defense technique with the forearm for the middle part of the body ( Chūdan ) in karate . uchi (内) stands for “inside”, ude (腕) for “arm”, uke (受 け) for “defense”.

The term is mainly used in Shōtōkan . In styles such as B. Gōjū-ryū , the same uke-waza is called yoko-uke. Both terms define the defensive movement from the inside out. The opposite is Soto-Uke , which means a movement from the outside in.
