As bank filtration is process water or drinking water consisting of designated wells in the immediate vicinity of rivers or lakes is obtained and therefore a significant proportion of water from these surface waters there.

The quality of the bank filtrate is therefore largely determined by the nature of the surface water used. In most cases it will therefore be necessary to use appropriate water treatment methods before it is fed into the supply network. This applies in particular to the aspects of hygiene. Furthermore, precautions must be taken to identify and handle unusual contamination of surface waters. These include:

  • Ongoing quality control of surface water (monitoring) and
  • Emergency planning (replacement supply, shutdown of the removal of bank filtrate in order to avoid the contamination of the surface water being carried over into the groundwater body)
