The Möhringen substation is one of three substations for feeding externally generated electricity into the Stuttgart city network. The plant operated by Netze BW was originally a 220 kV / 110 kV substation, which was converted into a 110 kV substation in the wake of the reduced energy consumption due to the economic crisis. In the course of this measure, the 110 kV switchgear was also considerably reduced in size.

From the Möhringen substation, there are two overhead lines with two circuits each, namely the 110 kV line 211 to Sindelfingen and the originally 220 kV 306 line to Wendlingen, which was downgraded to a 110 kV line in 2009. The latter now ends at the last mast in front of the substation, where there is a transition to 110 kV underground cables that lead into the 110 kV switchgear. Since this line represents the most important external feed line, two underground cable systems are connected in parallel for each circuit between the end mast and the switchgear.

The asylum seekers' home “Lautlinger Weg” has been located on the area of the former 220 kV system since 2015, after the 220 kV / 110 kV transformer, which had been inoperative for a long time, was removed.

In addition to the overhead line outlets to Sindelfingen and Wendlingen, there are also some 110 kV underground cable outlets in the Möhringen substation to the Birkach, Allmand and Vaihingen substations.

The most striking structure of the substation and at the same time the tallest structure in the Stuttgart district of Möhringen is the 93 meter high radio tower, built in 1975.
