United National Party
The United National Party , or UNP for short ( Sinhala : එක්සත් ජාතික පක්ෂය, Eksath Jathika Pakshaya ; Tamil : ஐக்கிய தேசியக் கட்சி), is a political party in Sri Lanka that was founded on September 6, 1946 by Don Stephen Senanayake .
It is run by Ranil Wickremesinghe .
In the parliamentary elections in Sri Lanka on August 17, 2015 , the UNP won 45.66% of the vote and thus 106 of the 225 seats in parliament.
In terms of its program, the UNP belongs to the liberal-conservative spectrum, and is the traditional rival of the other major party in Sri Lanka, the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP).
