Universal Software Radio Peripheral ( USRP ) is a suite of software defined radio hardware from Ettus Research LLC and its parent company National Instruments for the production of telecommunications system software .

development

Matt Ettus from the USA developed the USRP1, which is connected via USB2.

Then came the USRP2, which uses Gigabit Ethernet , and the autonomous E1x0 series that integrates an embedded computer and Linux.

The N2x0 (Gigabit Ethernet), the B100 (USB2), the B2x0 (USB3) and the X3x0 (Gigabit Ethernet, 10 Gigabit Ethernet, PCIe ) were added.

The embedded E1x0 was replaced by the E310.

Applications

With the USRP it is possible, for example, to operate a GSM base station as part of the OpenBTS project.

Using the USRPs, it is possible to digitize any radio signals with sufficient band restrictions or to send them vice versa. Many users of the various USRP devices develop their software using the free GNU Radio framework, using Matlab or Labview , or communicate with the hardware directly through the USRP own userland - device driver infrastructure UHD.

Specific functions

The devices of the series USRP1, USRP2, N2x0, E1x0 and X3x0 are modular and have exchangeable plug-in boards, so-called daughterboards , which house the analog circuit components. All devices have in common that they are basically operated as direct mixers , but because of their ability to shift the frequency of the oversampled signal in the integrated digital signal processing, they can also be used as IF receivers.

All devices from the second generation onwards have the ability to transmit streaming signals in a time-controlled manner with sample accuracy. The devices can be provided with a GPS receiver that specifies the internal reference clock and provides a coordinated absolute time.
