University of Charleston

The University of Charleston is a private college in Charleston, West Virginia with approximately 1,000 students. Locals often call the university "UC".

The school was founded in 1888 at Barboursville Seminary by the Southern Evangelical Methodical Church . When the Church lost control of the university, it was renamed Marshall University . Marshall is near Huntington, West Virginia . During the American Civil War in 1901, it was renamed Morris Harvey College in honor of Major Donorin's .

In 1935 the school was moved to downtown Charleston, merged with Kanawha Junior College, and became affiliated with the Mason College of Fine Arts and Music. In 1942 the school became independent from the Evangelical Methodical Church . Five years later, in 1947, the school moved back to its original facility in the Kanawha City neighborhood of Charleston.

The college fell into a crisis during the tough economic times of the 1970s, during which the nationalization of the college was considered. However, the state refused the gift. The school then decided to raise its community awareness and renamed itself Charleston University in 1987.

The UC athletic teams known as the Golden Eagles play second division in the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference in the NCAA .

The school is not related to Charleston's College in Charleston, South Carolina .
