Paldo (spelling: paldo) is a GNU / Linux distribution based on the self-developed package management system UPKG.
About the distribution
Paldo uses Gnome as its desktop environment. It originally comes from Switzerland . The name Paldo stands for p ure a daptable l inux d istributi o n ( "pure extensible Linux distribution"). The software contained in Paldo is used largely without patches compared to the official version. Where patches are nevertheless required, these should be passed on to the project.
It is very easy to change the distribution. You can change any package through local package archives. In these you can import your own changes to the source code and specifications into the system. The distribution draws its flexibility from UPKG, a package management system implemented in Mono .
During installation, Paldo largely configures itself without the user having to make many settings. Furthermore, there should not be more than one program for each task in the distribution. Another goal of Paldo is to support the latest technologies.
Special features of the distribution
UPKG
UPKG is a package manager for two students at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich . The current version UPKG was programmed under mono. At a later stage, the programming language used changes to Vala , a programming language developed by the two programmers. The package manager can be used to install the distribution, update it or create its CD / DVD media.
General software
Paldo makes no distinction between closed and open source software.
Distribution-specific software
Paldo only uses UPKG as its own software, all other software packages or configuration tools come from various open source projects. The Live CD installation program is also distribution specific.
Update and release cycles
Paldo publishes a new stable version every three months, which is always equipped with the latest software.
Paldo can be updated from one version to the next without having to reinstall the operating system. UPKG carries out the upgrade process alone and without any complex configuration.
