Great Baba

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ur-Baba (also Urbaba ; a transcription as Urbau is also possible) was a ruler of the Sumerian state of Lagasch and founder of the 2nd dynasty of Lagasch .

Little is known about the origins and reign of the Ur-Baba, but it appears that he had gained some influence in southern Sumer. One of the places in his sphere of influence seems to have been the venerable city of Ur , where he made his daughter Enanepada high priestess of the moon god Nanna . His daughter Ninalla married Gudea , who was to become his successor and continue Ur-Baba's work and bring it to its climax. At least two of the dynasty's three other rulers - including the last, Namahani , married the daughters of Ur-Baba.

The sparse surviving sources speak primarily of several construction activities for various gods in Ur-Baba's name throughout the national territory.
