User mode

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In Internet Relay Chat , user modes are a series of settings that a user can define for himself or his current connection to the IRC server . With a few exceptions, user modes are simple flags (switches) that switch individual options on or off.

Common user modes

In contrast to the channel modes, there are only a few uniform user modes for all IRC networks . Most of the time the following are supported:

User mode Brief description meaning
+ i Invisible You are only visible to users with whom you are in at least one channel. Others can no longer see you via queries like / who or / names from outside a channel.
+ s Server notices You will receive various additional messages that concern the status of the IRC server.
+ w Wallops This gives the so-called. Wallop messages , the IRC operator for open communication means / wallops can send.
+ o operator Is set automatically by the IRC server if the user authenticates himself to the server as an IRC op. Without further ado, i.e. with normal authentication, this mode cannot be set yourself.

However, the user modes s and w are no longer supported in many networks or are largely ineffective. However, other modes are available depending on the server software used . Examples of not original, but often occurring modes or meanings:

User mode Brief description meaning
+ r registered Can only be set or removed by IRC services and indicates that the user is identified for his nickname.
+ k Kill msgs The user receives notifications when other users have been removed from the network or banned.
+ x Host shading The otherwise freely visible specification of the host or the IP address is partially made unrecognizable for others in order to protect against direct attacks on the computer.

Some IRC servers automatically set certain user modes when establishing a connection. Many users have their IRC client automatically set or remove the desired user modes after the connection has been established.
