Vaginal septum (from Latin vagina "sheath" and septum "partition") or Latin vagina duplex is a congenital anatomical malformation of the vagina . A distinction is made between longitudinal (longitudinally oriented) and vertical (transverse to the vaginal opening) vaginal septa. In particular, the longitudinal septum - it can sometimes extend over the entire length of the vagina to the vaginal opening ( introitus ) - is in most cases without symptoms.

A vaginal septum only becomes noticeable when the young woman reaches sexual maturity. Possible signs include difficulty inserting a tampon , pain, and mechanical problems during intercourse . Difficult birth has also been described.
