The Valle de la Luna near La Paz
The formations in the Valle de la Luna are almost completely without vegetation

The Valle de la Luna (moon valley) is just under ten kilometers southeast of La Paz , the seat of government of Bolivia . The moon valley consists of thousands of rocks, crevices, mounds of earth and crater-like formations. The towers and pyramids are gray-brown to reddish and almost without vegetation. The Valle de la Luna was formed over millions of years by erosion and climatic contrasts. Heavy rainfalls and temperature fluctuations lead to the erosion of the clay soil and create the bizarre structures.

The fastest way to reach the Valle de la Luna is by taxi from La Paz. A signposted footpath leads through the formations, which is easy to walk on in dry weather.

The inhospitable area used to be fairly uninhabited, but the pressure of settlement has increased recently.
