The Valley International Airport ( IATA code : HRL , ICAO code : KHRL ) is the commercial airport of the American small town Harlingen in the US state of Texas .
Location and transport links
Valley International Airport is located five kilometers northeast of downtown Harlingen in Cameron County . Loop 499 runs southwest of the airport . Valley Beaches International Airport is not involved in local public transport ; passengers have to use rental cars, taxis and similar offers.
history
The airport opened in 1941 as a training base for the United States Army Air Forces . The base was later referred to as Harlingen Air Force Base by the United States Air Force . In 1964, the Air Force declared that it no longer needed Harlingen Air Force Base. Three years later, the city of Harlingen took over the airport from the Air Force. In August 1989 the groundbreaking ceremony took place for a new passenger terminal , which was completed in March 1991.

Runways
Valley International Airport has three runways , two of which run parallel. The longest runway is marked 17R / 35L and is 2530 meters long, while the parallel runway 17L / 35R is 1813 meters long. The cross wind runway 13/31 is 2212 meters long. All runways are 46 meters wide and covered with asphalt.

Valley Beaches International Airport has a passenger terminal on the western apron. There are eight gates , five of which are equipped with passenger boarding bridges .
Airlines and Destinations
The Valley International Airport is served by the airline American Eagle , Delta Connection , Frontier , Southwest Airlines , Sun Country Airlines and United Express used. Southwest Airlines had by far the largest market share in 2018, followed by United Express, Sun Country Airlines and United Express. In addition, Valley International Airport is used by the pure cargo airlines DHL Aviation and FedEx .
Only destinations in the United States are served, especially the major hubs in Texas .
