Van Hoorn

Van Hoorn is the name of a family of line ship owners and entrepreneurs in Leer from the 17th century until today.

Beginnings

The family is believed to be from the Netherlands. She was one of the founding members of the Reformed Church in Leer. The family was one of the leading families in Leer and was related to the Vissering, Rahusen and Ten Cate families.

Family members

Well-known family members in Leer were:

  • Claas Hessels van Horn (1630–1678), greengrocer in Leer and the oldest progenitor
  • Claas Claasen Hessels van Hoorn (1667–1737), pharmacist in Leer
  • Johanna van Hoorn (1690–1727), ran a tobacco shop with her husband Jacobus David Vissering in the Samson house on Osterstrasse (today: Wolff wine shop)
  • Simon van Hoorn (1704–1793), linen shipper, married to Maria Ten Cate
  • Gerrit van Hoorn (* 1736), linen weaver
  • Reinhard van Hoorn (1848–1927), businessman and banker at the R. van Hoorn bank

The family's influence declined with the decline of the line shipping companies in Leer.
