As deceleration lanes or Ausfädelungsstreifen departure is a motorway (z. B. motorway ), respectively. It enables road users, without having to brake, first to pull out of the flowing traffic (so-called unthreading) and only then to initiate the braking process on the deceleration lane to a speed appropriate for the exit. This prevents the flowing traffic from being obstructed by vehicles braking before the exit and thus a source of danger for rear-end collisions. In contrast to acceleration lanes, the deceleration lane must not be driven faster than the right-hand lane of the main lane.

Exits that do not have a deceleration lane are called direct exits .
