The Viana do Castelo class is a class of so far four deep sea patrol boats of the Portuguese Navy .
General
The Viana do Castelo- class boats are procured under the Navio de Patrulha Oceânica 2000 (NPO2000) program. They replace the corvettes of the João Coutinho and Baptista de Andrade classes from the 1960s and 70s .
The first unit - the NRP Viana do Castelo - entered service in March 2011 after several years of delay. Followed by November 2013, July 2018 and February 2019 for the next three units. On July 20, 2018, the Portuguese Prime Minister António Costa announced an additional order for six boats for 60 million euros each .
The boats will be built at the Viana do Castelo- based Estaleiros Navais de Viana do Castelo (ENVC) shipyard, which after privatization now operates as West Sea Estaleiros Navais .
