Virtaal is a free software for computer-aided translation (CAT) for professional translators. Virtaal is written in Python and is maintained by Translate.org.za.
Virtaal is particularly suitable for localization . In connection with the Translate Toolkit , however, the program can process a large number of other formats.
history
Work on Virtaal began in 2007 with the first version 0.1, which was only made available to a small group of localization experts. Version 0.2 was the first official release in October 2008.
The name Virtaal is a play on words. In Afrikaans , "vir taal" means "for language", while the same pronounced "vertaal" means "translate" in German.
Functional features
Virtaal attaches great importance to a very simple, clear user interface, the possibility of a purely mouse-based program operation and quality assurance. A localization can be checked for the corresponding specifications from Gnome, KDE, Openoffice.org, Mozilla or Drupal.
Document formats
Virtaal can handle bilingual file formats. These include XLIFF, Gettext PO and MO, TMX, TBX, Wordfast TM and Qt ts. The Translate Toolkit can also be used to prepare monolingual formats and translate them with Virtaal.
