Vivekananda Rock Memorial ( English Vivekananda Rock Memorial ) is a memorial popular with tourists in Vavathurai, Kanyakumari , India . It was built in 1970 in honor of Swami Vivekananda , who is said to have achieved enlightenment on the rock . The monument consists of two main buildings, the Vivekananda Mandapam and the Shripada Mandapam. The meditation hall, known as Dhyana Mandapam, is also attached to the monument, where visitors can meditate . The design of the mandapa incorporates various styles of temple architecture from across India. The rocks of the island are surrounded by the Laccadive Sea .
