Popular religion

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Popular religion is inconsistently used synonymously for:

  • Popular piety : the way a religion is practiced in everyday life outside of the official cult
  • Popular belief : The religious and spiritual ("superstitious") beliefs of the people in contrast to the respective "official religion"
  • Folk religions : Hinduism and Judaism are sometimes also called (great) folk religions

The respective use is only evident from the textual context.
