WEKA square in Gelsenkirchen

The WEKA-Karree is a department store in the city center of Gelsenkirchen . The former Westphalian department store was built in 1912 by the Düsseldorf architects Walter Klose and Georg Schäfer as the shopping center of the Jewish department store company Gebr. Alsberg AG and expanded in 1928. Among other things, it had a large shoe department and an oriental carpet room.

After the expropriation by the National Socialists, the Gelsenkirchen department store was transferred to Rings AG. The former owners were murdered.

Today, the Karree is home to the main administration of the Rhein-Ruhr transport association , the Gelsenkirchen blood donation center and various retail stores.
