European cooperation in legal metrology

The European Cooperation in Legal Metrology (WELMEC), engl. European Cooperation in Legal Metrology , is a European organization based in Braunschweig, which serves to harmonize legal metrology in Europe. Among other things, it promotes the exchange of information, the uniform application of European or international regulations, the dismantling of trade barriers in measuring instruments and records peculiarities in legal metrology. For these purposes, WELMEC issues recommendations, the so-called "WELMEC Guides", and maintains working relationships with relevant national and international bodies.

The WELMEC includes the 30 member states of the European Union and the European Free Trade Association , excluding Liechtenstein, Turkey and Croatia as associated members. There are also several observing and corresponding organizations, including the International Organization for Legal Metrology OIML.

On the German side, the cooperation is financed and supported by the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB).

history

The European cooperation in legal metrology was created in 1990 as the "Western European Legal Metrology Cooperation" by 18 of the then 19 members of the EU and EFTA by signing a declaration of intent. With the enlargement that went hand in hand with that of the EU, countries from Central and Eastern Europe joined the cooperation, but the acronym remained.
