waipu.tv is an Internet television and video-on-demand platform. It can be used on smart TVs , on mobile devices ( smartphones and tablets ), on PCs and via streaming media adapters ( Chromecast , Amazon Fire TV ). waipu.tv had 452,500 subscription customers as of March 31, 2020.
waipu.tv is a brand of Exaring AG based in Munich , in which Freenet AG holds 50.01%. What is special is the company's own high-speed fiber optic infrastructure, which is used exclusively for the transmission of the television offer. With it, the waipu.tv service is distributed in high quality (planned up to 4K ), even at peak times when broadcasts via the public Internet can reach their limits. Waipu.tv is developed exclusively in Germany.
waipu.tv can only be booked in Germany, but can also be used when traveling in other European countries. In addition to paid channel packages, users can also access a free offer without additional advertising. In addition, selected on-demand content and media library content is also available on demand in the paid packages.
Technical features
The mobile devices (smartphones and tablets) act as reception and control elements at waipu.tv. For example, you can use your smartphone to For example, changing programs by means of so-called Waipen (an upward swiping movement with which the program is "pushed" from the smartphone to the television). You can also use the smartphone to program recordings, adjust the volume, fast-forward recordings, etc. In addition, the app includes a television assistant with user-specific program notes and information.
You can jump back to the beginning of TV programs that are running (restart). In addition, the current stream can also be paused using a pause function.
The waipu.tv platform enables a recording function on memories in the data center of Exaring AG. From there, users can call up their recordings at any time. Each recording is made individually for the user.
Up to four parallel streams are available for the user per account, which enable use on different devices.
Availability
waipu.tv can only be booked in Germany. Use in other European countries is possible while traveling with the mobile option. A broadband connection with at least 6 Mbit / s is required for use. All large and medium-sized Internet providers in Germany are connected to the Exaring AG fiber optic ring. Little by little, smaller providers are also being connected. There is currently coverage of around 97% of the connections in Germany (as of June 2019).
PVR functions
The recording function of waipu.tv can also be used with the serial recording function for the majority of the available channels. The stations in the ProSiebenSat.1 Group are an exception ; only selected programs (mostly in-house productions) can be recorded here. Licensed productions such as international series and feature films cannot be recorded. Sky Sport News HD broadcasts can generally not be recorded.
