occupation

Waking the Dead is a crime series produced by the BBC between 2000 and 2011 about a team of specialists that has been rolling up previously unsolved criminal cases years later. In Germany, the pilot film under the title Who wakes the dead was broadcast individually by several third ARD programs. The ZDF shows the episodes, however, as standard, except for the consequences of the first season.

On September 4 and 5, 2000, BBC One broadcast a pilot for the series, which includes nine completed seasons to the end. On November 9, 2004, showed Bavarian Television (BR) from 21:45 the pilot episode bloc s . The other four cases of the first season, however, did not follow until today (2011). On March 5, 2006, ZDF broadcasted the first episode of the second season with Der Spielkartenmörder , now under the series title Waking the Dead - On behalf of the dead . In 2007, the third season of the Sunday crime series followed .

If the cases are broadcast in Great Britain as double episodes with a total running time of approx. 120 minutes, the ZDF broadcasts the individual episodes of the series, which was awarded an Emmy in 2004, as 100-minute films. The cuts are made directly with the BBC. Furthermore, the series is now broadcast in the United States (BBC America) and Australia ( Nine Network ).

action

The five-person " Cold Cases Unit " (originally: Cold Cases Unit ) normally deals with crimes that took place years before but that have not yet been resolved. In order to find a solution, the group uses not only newly emerged and previously treated statements and tips, but also the latest findings in forensics , for example often DNA analyzes that were impossible to carry out at the time due to insufficient trace amounts. In addition to the actual investigation, stories from the lives of the main characters, e.g. B. the eccentric workaholics and senior civil servant Peter Boyd.

Characters

Last team

This list deals with the main actors of the final season. Since only the episodes up to season 4 were broadcast in Germany, the current British original team line-up differs from the one we know.

  • Detective Superintendent Peter Boyd ( Trevor Eve , voice actor: Joachim Kerzel ) - Boyd is the head of the investigative group, his participation in the program of the Cold Case Unit is mainly due to the unexplained disappearance of his son in the 1990s. If the emotional Boyd was still married in the pilot film, he lives as a single in the following episodes. However, no explanation is given as to why his marital status suddenly changed. The superintendent has a good collegial relationship with the members of his team, especially with Mel Silver , whose serial death haunts him again and again in later episodes.
  • Psychological Profiler Dr. Grace Foley ( Sue Johnston , voice actress: Kerstin Sanders-Dornseif ) - Foley had a 30-year career as a profiler when she joined the Cold Cases Unit team . The psychologist appears as an astute team member who is too good for any sensible scuffle with Boyd.
  • Detective Inspector Spencer Jordan ( Wil Johnson , voice actor : Charles Rettinghaus ) - Although Jordan works very closely with Boyd , he can be seen as the superintendent's counterpart because, unlike his boss, he mostly follows the prescribed paths of investigation. Before joining the CCU , the black inspector worked for the UK Atomic Energy Authority Constabulary .
  • Detective Superintendent Sarah Cavendish ( Eva Birthistle , Season 9) - Cavendish replaced Sergeant Goodman from episode "Harbinger" after the serial death in the final episode of season eight.
  • Forensic Pathologist Eve Lockhart ( Tara Fitzgerald Season 6 - Season 9) - Lockhardt replaced her predecessor Gibson after her departure from the episode "Wren Boys" as a pathologist on the team.

Former team members

  • Detective Sergeant Amelia "Mel" Silver ( Claire Goose , Season 1 - Season 4, voice actress : Ghadah Al-Akel ) - Silver was firmly integrated into the team until her serial death in the episode "Shadowplay" and was mainly the pathologist Frankie Wharton very close. Silver's work as well as her death are taken up again and again in the following episodes. B. in "Towers of Silence" and "Yahrzeit" .
  • Forensic Pathologist Frankie Wharton ( Holly Aird , Season 1 - Season 4, voice actress: Katja Nottke ) - After the death of her good friend Mel , Wharton also left the Cold Case Unit to focus on research again. In real life, actress Holly Aird dropped out of the show because of her pregnancy.
  • Forensic Pathologist Felix Gibson ( Esther Hall , Season 5) - Gibson took the place as pathologist after Frankie Wharton left the team; her departure after only one season was not further explained.
  • Detective Sergeant Stella Goodman ( Félicité du Jeu , Season 5 - Season 8) - Goodman replaced Sergeant Silver from the episode Black Run after she died in the final episode of the fourth season. At first, she was rejected by Boyd , who could not cope with the loss of her predecessor, but soon she was part of the team in the Cold Cases Unit . After four seasons she died a serial death.
