In the 8th century the names Waldo and Wolderus ( Waltger ) were mentioned. For the 10th century people with -vald were mentioned in Norse sagas (Thorvald). Since the 10th century, the name form Walter appeared.

The syllable possibly was derived from Germanic waltan fighting ago.
