Forest beard on the trunk of a felled spruce

In forestry , the frayed edge of the hinge that remains on the trunk of a felled tree is referred to as the forest beard . These are pieces of wood that are torn from the stick when the tree is felled. The forest beard is removed in the course of the subsequent work-up of the trunk, as are the roots . The appearance of a forest beard on the hinge is usually an indication of a good and safe felling technique .
