Walter H. Tyler

Walter H. Tyler (born March 28, 1909 in Los Angeles , California , † November 3, 1990 in Orange County , California) was an American production designer .

Life

Tyler began his career as a production designer in 1944 and worked from 1946 on major feature film productions such as George Marshall's thriller The Blue Dahlia . In the following year he was nominated for the first time for an Oscar for his work on the drama A Lady with a Past . In 1951 he received his only Oscar for the monumental film Samson and Delilah . It further followed Oscar nominations for Audrey Hepburn - Comedies Roman Holiday and Sabrina and for Cecil B. DeMille's epic film The Ten Commandments with Charlton Heston as Moses .

In the early 1960s, Tyler received three more Academy Award nominations, for Joseph Anthony's drama Many Are Called , the Jerry Lewis comedy Visit to a Small Planet, and for the Tennessee Williams film adaptation of Summer and Smoke . In the 1960s, Tyler worked on seven music films with Elvis Presley such as Café Europa , Acapulco and King of Hot Rhythms . He was also involved in the Neil Simon films Barefoot in the Park , A Strange Couple and Never Again New York .

In the 1970s, Tyler worked repeatedly for Disney , including Herbie Big in Ride and Island at World's End ; for this he was last nominated for an Oscar in 1975. For Disney he also directed several episodes of the television series Disneyworld . Otherwise he rarely worked for television; In total, he worked on three television films . He received an Emmy nomination in 1974 for the television film The Execution of Private Slovik with Martin Sheen in the lead role .

Tyler was the grandfather of the film composer Brian Tyler .
