Wandsbeck's Mercurius

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Wandsbeck Mercurius was published in Wandsbeck from 1745 to 1770 .

It was the first German newspaper that was written specifically for the general public. The first publisher of Mercurius, Dietrich Christian Milatz , tried to achieve a high circulation with local scandal news. The section "From Capadocien" contained hardly any encrypted local news, which the Hamburg Senate repeatedly took action until it succeeded in banning the newspaper in 1770.

Heinrich Carl von Schimmelmann , at the time of the ban, the publisher of Mercurius, then founded the magazine Der Wandsbecker Bothe . This was of course subject to advance censorship because of its predecessor.
