why we were so dangerous. stories of an unofficial commemoration is a film produced in 2006 as part of the cultural studies institute of the Humboldt University.

Synopsis

Between 1983 and 1986 women from the East Berlin group “Lesbians in the Church” (LiK) tried to take part in several commemorative events in the former Ravensbrück women's concentration camp . Twenty years later, four of these women remember the events, motives, the harsh state reactions and the political work in the group: four different memories, conclusions, life paths that meet again at this "node".

backgrounds

Lesbian life was hardly visible to the public in the GDR. At that time the church was the only way to meet and organize in public. The group "Lesbians in the Church" was the first GDR lesbian group.

History of origin

The filmmakers came across notes, memory logs and pictures from the events of the 1980s in Berlin archives. Some of the women in the group could be found and were still living in Berlin. During the research it became clear that there is a great need to speak (and to be heard) about the political work surrounding the visits to Ravensbrück and the conflicts with the state authorities.
