The Washington Office on Latin America (WOLA) - Advocacy for Human Rights in the Americas is a church-based think tank in the United States . The non-governmental organization works for strong democracies in the countries of America through analysis and the strengthening of civil society .

history

The Washington Office on Latin America was created under the impression of the brutal military coup in Chile on September 11, 1973 . A number of US non-governmental organizations were alarmed by the numerous military coups in Latin America. Church organizations in particular received reports of serious human rights violations among the juntas in Latin America, supported by US politicians from Washington. The Episcopal Conference of the United States and the National Council of Churches founded the Against this background, in 1974 Washington Office on Latin America .

WOLA did not see itself then and now as the "voice of Latin America", but rather as a mediator between those affected by US policy in the countries of South America and US policy. Since then, the institute has accompanied developments in Latin America: in the 1980s the end of many bloody conflicts, the democratization efforts in the 1990s and the numerous social transitions from the 2000s onwards.

WOLA helped set up the International Commission against Impunity in Guatemala (CICIG) in the Central American country.
