history

The Friedlingen water tower belonged to Färberei & Appretur Schusterinsel GmbH , which at times employed up to 1200 people. The Swiss processing industry forced its way onto the German market at the end of the 19th century because of its convenient border location and good rail connections. The water tower was part of what was originally an area of 35,000 square meters with a large number of factory buildings with an area of 8,000 square meters. In 1930 a concrete base was added to the water tower. With the crisis in the textile industry in the 1970s, the company went bankrupt and the site was demolished. Today the Schusterinsel is mainly a residential area with a commercial settlement, a park and a pier. The water tower is the only remaining part of the large textile complex.
