Wavetable module
A wavetable module (engl. For waveform table ) or a wavetable board is an extension plug-in card for electronic tone generator , adjusted by the wavetable synthesis use. Finished modules are available for sound cards , keyboards and synthesizers . It is a sound library that is stored in a ROM . This means that these predefined tones or sounds can be called up and played with the master device.
The internal data communication between the carrier and expansion card takes place either via MIDI or a proprietary bus . The wavetable module is always supplied with power via the carrier system in which the wavetable card is installed.
Wavetable & Computer
Computer sound cards are connected via e.g. B. the 26-pin Waveblaster interface by simply plugging in the card ( see also: Soundblaster ).

Electronic sound generators
In contrast to the aforementioned wavetable cards for computer sound cards, which comply with instrument bank standards such as General MIDI , General Synth or Yamaha's XG , expansion cards with special instrument sounds of a certain category can be purchased for synthesizers or workstation keyboards (e.g. B. piano or grand piano , strings , brass , etc.). Thus, by using wavetable expansion cards, an electronic sound generator (e.g. a big band) can be subsequently adapted to the instrument requirements and the type of music to be played, depending on the choice of wavetable cards.
For some master keyboards, which initially do not have their own sound generation, extensions are offered to make them playable. For example, there are modules such as the Waldorf Nano for keyboards from the CME.
The type and scope of the instruments depend on the manufacturer.
