White coat hypertension

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The term white coat hypertension ( Engl. White coat hypertension ) means the blood pressure values due to situation-specific fears are increased in the patient. In contrast to self and outpatient measurements (e.g. automatic long-term blood pressure measurement), the blood pressure values measured in a doctor's practice or clinic are then consistently higher. One also speaks of isolated clinical hypertension .

If patients are classified as hypertensive only on the basis of these individual medical measurements , there is a risk of incorrect treatment . A survey study showed higher mortality and a higher risk of cardiovascular complications in this group of patients. In any case, a long-term blood pressure measurement should be used to clarify individually excessive blood pressure values.

The opposite are "masked" hypertensive patients (also called "practice normotonia"). In this group of patients, normal blood pressure is measured in the clinic or in the practice, as the patient feels particularly safe in this situation and is therefore relaxed. A stress test usually has an unmasking effect here. Long-term blood pressure measurement is also a means of detecting a possibly increased blood pressure value under everyday stress.
