Wels zoo

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Welser Tiergarten is a park and a zoo in the city of Wels . The zoo is the oldest in Upper Austria, housing 650 animals on 28,000 m². The park is bordered in the south and west by the Welser Messe, in the east by the Almtalbahn and in the north by Maria-Theresia-Straße.

history

The roots of the zoo go back to 1930. When a wildlife exhibition took place on the area at the Welser Volksfest , the city of Wels initiated the creation of a permanent exhibition on this basis. The city acquired the park of the Herminenhof and made it accessible to visitors as a deer meadow. In 1934 a bird enclosure was opened, which still exists today.

Operation of the zoo was also interrupted during the Second World War and was not resumed until 1952. Since 1954, monkeys have been kept for the first time in addition to the various bird species and native wild animals. Today the Wels zoo is the one with the greatest biodiversity among primates. In the following years the zoo was renewed again and again, most recently in 2012 when a new monkey house was built.

concept

The city of Wels owns the zoo. It is open all year round and is one of the few animal parks in Austria where entry is free. The city of Wels takes care of the maintenance and financing; companies also have the option of sponsoring the entire park or individual animal species. In addition to numerous exotic and native bird species, the zoo has a large number of primates , and a new monkey house was built for them in 2012. The native animal species include two lynxes , deer and pot-bellied pigs .

A side arm of the Mühlbach flows through the area , which is branched off by a bucket wheel , it provides for the watering of the zoo.

In the zoo there is a buffet, a children's playground and a chess area. The closest train stations are the local train station and the fair train station.
