who-knows-was is a question-and-answer platform that has existed since April 1996 and enables a free exchange of knowledge and know-how on a mutual basis.

Registered users have the option of asking questions to other users by e-mail, who can register as interested, beginner, advanced or expert in certain subject areas . Each user rates his or her competence with regard to the topics he has specified; an evaluation procedure does not exist. The inquiries and answers are only public if the questioner or the respondent agrees.

In addition to this communication, there is a moderated forum with around 170 topic “boards” grouped according to general terms, in which questions can be asked and answered. Answers to frequently asked questions were incorporated into a so-called FAQ module, which in February 2012 comprised 1,954 articles.

For the 15th anniversary in April 2011, over 500,000 members were registered. Around 5,000,000 referrals have taken place since it was founded.

In mid-2015, the structure of the forum, which was based on newsreaders , was replaced by a linear structure (spaghetti strands). Since the changeover, the forum has been based on the free software Discourse . Discourse aims to improve the discussion culture on the Internet and offers everyone interested the opportunity to participate in the further development of the software.

The internet platform began as a leisure project within the NCG (Network Competence Group) by the computer science students Heiner Jürgensen, Michael Otto and Norbert Schuler at the University of Hamburg and was publicly launched on April 11, 1996. In 1999, at the beginning of the New Economy, werweiss-was.de was sold to the then up-and-coming Internet company ID Media , whereby the founders continued to work as consultants and developers of the platform. At the same time as werweiss-was.de, Jürgensen, Otto and Schuler and Hanno Zulla founded their own company epublica in 2001 , which was also developed by XING . After the dot-com bubble burst , the founders bought back werweiss-was.de with epublica in 2003 and continued to operate it. Wer-weiss-was GmbH was founded on October 22, 2007, the majority of which is owned by ProSiebenSat.1 Media AG , with epublica still holding 25.2 percent in it. Wer-weiss-was GmbH is 100% a subsidiary of ProSiebenSat.1 Media AG.

Since 2010 the wer-weiss-was GmbH has been operating thematically own satellite websites based on the expert brokerage of wer-weiss-was, in cooperation with media offerings such as the TV show Galileo or the broadcaster Kabel eins .

Since January 1st, 2019 the internet platform "Werweiss-was.de" has a new operator with the FutureTV Group GmbH from Rostock. The users of the forum were informed of this both in a forum post on January 9, 2019 at 0:01 a.m. and by email. On February 9, 2019, FutureTV presented itself to the users of who-knows-was in a separate forum post. As the operator, FutureTV Group GmbH only took over the asset from ProSiebenSat.1 Media AG, wer-weiss-was GmbH was not taken over.

From September 3rd, 2019 to September 5th, 2019, Werweiss-was.de was relaunched and received a new design, a more modern logo and a new homepage. Access via 7Pass has also been removed and the Discourse software has been upgraded to the latest version.

Some might wonder why there was a relaunch at all. There are three main reasons:

The old site was based on an old version of the Discourse forum software. The former operators used a lot of plugins and turned important adjusting screws. As a result, updates were no longer possible. The result were many bugs that could not be fixed without a relaunch.

On the other hand, the old site was not mobile. This is fatal nowadays, because since April 2018 Google has only been using the mobile index to display search results. The old WWW had very few pages on the index. For this reason, the page could not get any visibility at all and the numbers inevitably had to go down.

In addition to the problems mentioned above and some structural weaknesses, there was also the fact that there was virtually no SEO optimization.

With the update, we have optimized and modernized the WWW in terms of design, technical structure and speed so that Google can index it better.

Since the relaunch, the platform has received the latest updates of the Software Discourse on a regular basis and thus benefits from all new developments and adjustments. The users are regularly informed about the updates and the improvements relevant to them.
