Werner F. Ebke

Werner F. Ebke (born September 10, 1951 in Holzhausen near Osnabrück ) is a German professor of civil law, business law, international private law and tax law. In 1991 he was the first German to be appointed to the American Law Institute . Until his retirement he was managing director of the Institute for German and European Company and Business Law at the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg .

Life

Ebke studied law from 1972/73 to 1977 at the Westphalian Wilhelms University in Münster and at the University of California, Berkeley . In 1978 he obtained a Master of Laws (LL.M.) degree in Berkeley . Ebke received his doctorate in 1981 under Bernhard Großfeld with a thesis on the subject of auditors and third-party liability as a doctor of law (Dr. iur.). For his dissertation he received a prize from the Commission of the European Communities . In 1983 he passed his assessor exam in Lower Saxony. Ebke completed his habilitation in 1987 with Bernhard Großfeld with a thesis on international foreign exchange law. While writing his habilitation thesis, he was a professor of American corporate law, business law and accounting at the Southern Methodist University School of Law in Dallas , Texas . From 1988 to 2004 he was a full professor of rights and held the chair for civil law, business and tax law and international private law at the University of Konstanz . In the 2004/05 winter semester, he accepted a professorship for civil law, German, European and international corporate law at the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg. In 2018 he retired and was succeeded by Dirk A. Verse .

In 1991, Ebke and Detlev Vagts ( Harvard Law School ) received the “ Max Planck Research Award for Internationally Outstanding Research Achievements”. In 2005 he gave the EBS University of Business and Law in Oestrich-Winkel the honorary doctorate (Dr. rer. Pol. Hc). In April 2013 he received an honorary doctorate in law (Dr. iur. Hc) from the Law School of the EBS University of Economics and Law, Wiesbaden . Ebke was Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the EBS Law School from May 2012 to December 2014.

Ebke is the editor of legal magazines and series of publications as well as the Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung and the newspapers of the Schleswig-Holstein newspaper publisher .

He was a member of the advisory board of the Vodafone Stiftung Deutschland gGmbH .
