Westring tunnel

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Westring tunnel is a 285 m long underpass of two streets and a park-like green area in Bocholt . It is part of the so-called west bypass . This is part of an overall concept according to which Bocholt is to be provided with a complete outer ring system. The Westring tunnel is in the second completed construction phase. The first construction phase was completed in September 2000. Together, the two construction phases form the Westring, which also includes the Westring tunnel. It connects the extension of the B473 with Dinxperloer Straße. Road users to and from the Netherlands no longer have to drive through the streets of the city center. The tunnel thus contributes to safety in road traffic.

The Bocholt districts and infrastructure facilities (Aa-See, technical college, industrial park, hospital) are to be better developed through the ring roads. In addition, the inner city ring should relieve the main access roads leading into the city center.

The groundbreaking for the tunnel construction took place on December 11, 2003 by the then mayor Klaus Ehling. It was officially opened to traffic on June 28, 2006. Costs of around 18 million euros were due, which is why the city of Bocholt's most expensive project has come under great criticism in recent years. It is also criticized why the road section was designed as a tunnel and not as a ground-level or elevated road. On the part of the city, the reason is that they did not want to divide the Löverick district and that the residents can also offer a green area to relax.

Legal dispute over additional claims

Because the contract could not be placed with the construction company directly after the end of the tendering process, these additional demands made u. a. due to increased building material prices. In several legal proceedings, the construction company was generally granted a right to these additional claims. After an out-of-court settlement, the city of Bocholt paid an additional € 500,000.
