Whatsonstage awards

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The WhatsOnStage Awards, or alternatively the WhatsOnStage "theatregoers 'choice" awards, formerly known as the Theatregoers' Choice Awards , are organized by the WhatsOnStage.com website. The prize honors artists and productions from British theater with a focus on London's West End .

Nominations and eventual winners will be chosen by the public voting. The awards take place annually in February. In 2012 they were performed at the Prince of Wales Theater in the West End.

history

In early 2001, WhatsOnStage.com published the list of nominees for this year's Laurence Olivier Awards and invited visitors to the site to vote online who they thought should win. 5,000 people took part within 14 days. The results of this survey differed greatly from those of the jury. For the 2002 awards, the editors compiled their own list of nominees and held their first launch party in 2003 to announce the list to around 200 guests from the industry. The first award ceremony was introduced for the 2008 awards.

description

Each year the list of nominees for the award is compiled with the help of thousands of theatergoers who sign up to nominate their favorites in all of the 20+ award categories. The nominations will be announced in early December at a star-studded kick-off event. From then on, the voting period starts and runs until the end of January of the following year. In 2012/13 over 60,000 theatergoers registered for a vote, with the winners in the different categories fluctuating dramatically from day to day.
