The resistance star East Asia (Dutch: Verzetsster Oost-Azië ) was donated by Queen Juliana of the Netherlands by royal decree on October 26, 1948 in order to honor those Dutch subjects in the Dutch East Indies who showed solidarity, strength of mind or determination, or praiseworthy help for those Dutch who were interned as prisoners of war or civil prisoners during the Second World War . Members of the Dutch resistance in Southeast Asia were also honored.

The star commemorates the resistance against the Japanese occupation of the Dutch East Indies , later Indonesia , in World War II - by those who went underground after the surrender of the Royal Dutch East Indian Army. This resistance suffered enormous loss of life.

The bronze six-pointed star with a flaming sun and the words "De Geest overwint" (The spirit triumphs) was designed by Frans Smits . The star hangs on a purple ribbon with two gold stripes in the middle. The colors are symbolic: the golden yellow is reminiscent of the custom in Southeast Asia to wrap a valuable gift in a gold-colored cloth. On the back is the text "Maart 1942 - O.Azië - Augustus 1945" (March 1942 - East Asia - August 1945).

The Resistance Star has been awarded a total of 471 times since 1948.
