Registered musicians can upload individual audio tracks from an instrument they have played in there. On the basis of these sound tracks, other users can add recorded pieces of music to missing instruments, so that a new composition is created.

history

In April 2011 Richard Kaiser founded the platform as a hobby project in the Eifel. The idea behind the offer is to get in contact with other musicians via the Internet and to produce music together in a digital jam session . The site is aimed at musicians of different genres and skill levels and offers the opportunity to jam with people from different countries. Since the start of the offer, both the number of users and the available tracks have risen continuously. In the meantime, wikiloops.com claims to have 51,000 registered users who can access a repertoire of 100,000 tracks (as of January 2018).

Functions

The core function of wikiloops.com is the exchange of recorded pieces of music that are recorded and uploaded by individual users. These templates can be used by other musicians by adding to recordings of one or more instruments. The result of this musical collaboration is a so-called remix.

With the help of a search engine, the user can filter according to various criteria such as genre, instrument, type of beat or tempo and select suitable jam tracks that can be called up as free audio streams without commercial breaks. The interface of wikiloops.com is aimed specifically at practicing musicians. According to this, for example, played tracks are automatically started from the beginning so that the practitioner can start all over again without having to take their hand off the instrument.

For reasons of copyright infringement, the pieces of music generated by the user must be composed and recorded by the user. The upload of externally produced music contributions or cover versions of known songs is not permitted.

Community

The development of the wikiloops.com project is strongly community-driven and is largely based on donations and offers of help from registered users. Many functions of the offer were jointly developed on the basis of user feedback. The moderation of the forums, the translations for the different language versions of the website and the beta testing are carried out by members of the community. Since 2014, official wikiloops meetings have taken place annually, at which users from the community meet for an international musician meeting and jam weekend.
